Hemp Plants vs Marijuana Plants

Hemp Plants vs Marijuana Plants

Does CBD come from the marijuana plant or hemp plant?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in a type of plant know as cannabis; some other common ones being CBG, CBA, CBN, CBC and THC. These plants are further classified as Indica, Sativa or Ruderalis.

When someone talks about hemp or marijuana, they’re referring to two species of the Cannabis Sativa family. While they share the same family and some similarities, hemp plants are actually a different strain than marijuana plants and produce different effects.

What’s the difference between Hemp and Marijuana?

The main difference between the plants come from their THC content. Hemp plants yield a high cannabinol profile and low THC (around 0.3% or less), whereas marijuana plants have a low cannabinol profile and high THC (around 10%). THC is what normally produces the psychoactive element commonly associated with marijuana, while the cannabinol has no psychoactive element.

Instead, CBD actually is thought to have an opposite effect on people, reducing some of the more negative side effects of marijuana. This has led it to be used in a variety of ways to help people reduce stress and pain - CBD oil is a great method of natural healing.

There are also a number of legal differences that are currently going through changes for marijuana and hemp. As a quick example, it is legal in Kentucky to grow hemp plants, but illegal to grow marijuana. Other states, such as Colorado and California, have started to open up these restrictions, allowing marijuana to be grown as well.
